Additional Information About Dental Implants and All-On-4s

Despite the advancements in dental care, many Americans still suffer from tooth loss. These are mostly caused by trauma or injury, gum disease, cavities, or periodontal disease. For years, the only solution to tooth loss was dentures and bridges but today we now have dental implants available.

  • What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are now the standard of care when it comes to tooth replacements. It is a surgical fixture replacement for tooth roots. These implants are placed into the jawbone and are then made to integrate with the bone over a span of a couple of months without being recognized as a foreign object. These dental implants mimic natural teeth as they are stable enough and do not affect other teeth nearby. Dental implants are now considered to be the standard for loss tooth replacements and have a 98% success rate.

  • What are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

There are many advantages to having dental implants, including:

    • Dental Implants Match Natural Teeth

Dental implants come in different shapes and sizes. Our trained dentists will be working with you to design an implant that perfectly fits and goes along with the rest of your teeth. This is a very important step in order for your implants to seem natural and not stand out.

    • Prevents Bone Mass Loss

When you lose teeth, you also lose bone mass in your jaw. This is why dental implants are the best solution for teeth loss because they are able to replace the jaw bone stimulation which prevents you from losing bone mass.

    • Prevents Changes in Face Structure

When you lose teeth, the shape of your face changes which may cause your face to look asymmetrical or disproportionate. Dental implants provide the same support as regular teeth which prevents your face from changing shape.

    • No Cavities

The material that dental implants are made of prevents your implants from decaying. This way, you’ll never have to worry about the possibility of getting cavities. However, you still need to care for your implants as they can still get infected from bacterial build-up.

    • Easy Care

As previously mentioned, dental implants mimic real teeth which means that it requires the same care as natural teeth. Aside from this, no fancy or special products are needed in preserving and caring for your implants.

    • Does Not Slip

The reason why a lot of people with dentures switch to getting dental implants instead is that dentures can shift and move inside of your mouth. This may be embarrassing to some. Dental implants on the other hand are firmly placed and you will never have to worry about them moving.

    • Permanent Solution for Teeth Loss

Compared to other tooth loss solutions, dental implants are a permanent fix and are designed to last you for the rest of your life.

  • Who Should Get Dental Implants?

Contrary to popular belief, almost all patients are candidates for dental implants. Ideally, patients who wish to receive implants should have good oral health and hygiene overall. The patient should have healthy gums and adequate bone density in order to support the implants and for the operation to be successful. However, there are still patients who do not have the best oral health that may still get dental implants. It is important for our dentists to check the severity of your condition as each case is unique. If you suffer from these concerns, we recommend booking an appointment with our dental professionals to see the best course of action for you.

  • The All-On-4 Dental Implants

The all-on-four dental implant is a technique that was developed in the 90s by Dr. Paulo Malo from Portugal. This technique uses only 4 implants instead of the standard amount of 6 to 8 implants. These implants are made to replace the entire set of either your upper or lower teeth. These implants are a permanent and natural-looking alternative to dentures.

Prior to the All-On-Four technique, a surgeon would have to insert one titanium screw to your gums to each tooth. A fake tooth would then be attached to each titanium screw. With the all-on-four, they would only have to insert four titanium posts to your jawbone. Permanent dentures will then be attached to the four titanium posts providing you with seamless, natural-looking teeth.

All-on-four dental implants are meant to be a long-lasting solution to your teeth loss problems. These implants can last for 20 years or more depending on how you take care of them. There is a 94% success rate for long-term implant success that lasts more than 10 years.

  • Benefits of All-On-Four Implants

    • The procedure is able to restore your full set of teeth with just 4 implants instead of the standard 6 to 8 implants.
    • The implants are placed securely in your mouth and there will be no movement or shifting like with dentures.
    • You are able to replace your entire set of teeth in just one operation.
    • The All-On-Four procedure is more cost-effective in comparison to replacing each tooth individually.
    • This procedure is a great option for all ages who have lost their teeth.
    • The recovery for All-On-Four implants is faster than with traditional implants.
  • Things To Consider Before Getting All-On-Four Implants

    • You’ll need a high level of bone density in order to keep your implants in place.
    • You won’t be able to know how your teeth look or feel prior to the procedure.
    • The implants cannot be placed on the back of the mouth or the molar area because of great bite force.
    • For the first two weeks after the procedure, patients will need to stick to a liquid diet.
  • How to Prepare for The All-On-Four Operation

This procedure is extremely intricate and complex. This is why our dentists will be extremely involved with the entire process, from planning to the procedure itself. The patient’s medical history will have to be examined in order to avoid any possible complications during surgery. It is important for our dentists to know if our patients have taken any medication, if they suffer from periodontal disease, and if the patient is a smoker.

It is important for the patient to have good oral health in order to reduce recovery time and to make sure that the operation is a success in the long run. Prior to the surgery, patients are asked to stop smoking as smoking can cause a lot of complications for any surgical procedure. Smoking can cause infections and can result in the rejection of dental implants. It is also important that all medication being used is currently disclosed to the practicing dentist as these may interfere with the healing process. Medication used may be changed or eliminated. It is also important for the patient to watch their diet before the operation. Most of the time, food that contains a lot of fat is asked to be reduced or removed from one’s diet as this can affect bone strength, wound healing, and coagulation.
